  • How It Works

Emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), and other harmful gases pose significant risks to human health and the environment. Increasing stringent environmental regulations require high destruction efficiency (DRE) of those components. Thermal Oxidizers offer a proven and reliable solution for effectively destroying these emissions achieving required DRE. Cimarron offering includes Direct Fired Thermal Oxidizers FIRECATTM and Recuperative Thermal Oxidizers R-FIRECATTM that can achieve up to 99.9999% DRE.

    Direct Fired Thermal Oxidizer

In a direct fired Thermal Oxidizer, contaminated gas or liquid is mixed with combustion air and heated to a high temperature by burning auxiliary fuel. This high-temperature environment facilities an oxidation process that converts harmful components into harmless components such as carbon dioxide and water.

    Recuperative Thermal Oxidizer

Recuperative Thermal Oxidizers incorporate heat exchanger(s) to enhance energy efficiency.  A heat exchanger preheats the incoming air or waste or both by recuperating heat from the existing clean flue gas. Commonly employed heat exchangers include plate and tubular designs. This heat recovery significantly reduces auxiliary fuel usage.

In scenarios where the waste stream is exothermic, preheating the waste or air is not advantageous. In such cases, the heat contained within the flue gas can be utilized by integrating a waste heat boiler or a hot oil heater within the system to generate steam or preheat oil.

Standard Features for all Thermal Oxidation Systems

    • NFPA 86 Compliant Burner Management Systems
    • Skid Mounted Fuel Gas Trains
    • Integrated Control Panel
  • Additional Technical Information

    More information on TO types:

Fume (Endothermic and Exothermic) Thermal Oxidizer

Endothermic: Waste gas containing primary inert such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide, air with small amount of organic material, or waste liquid.
Exothermic: High heating value hydrocarbon waste gases.

These are the most common Thermal Oxidizer units supplied by Cimarron. Most of the systems are vertical units with side-fired or up-fired burner. When heat recovery is used a horizontal arrangement is often selected.

    Typical Applications:
    • Refineries
    • Chemical plants
    • Gaseous/Liquid waste from process plants
    • Dehydration units

    Key Features:
    • Destruction Removal Efficiency (DRE)- Up to 99.9999%
    • Low NOx- ≤ 0.06 lb/MMBtu
    • NFPA 86 Compliant Burner Management system

    Halogenated Waste Thermal Oxidizers

During combustion of Halogenated waste acid gas such as HCl, HF, and HBr is formed. These gases must be removed before the flue gas can be emitted to the atmosphere. This is achieved by utilizing absorber or scrubber, after the flue gas is properly cooled. Cimarron offers complete Thermal Oxidizer Systems that include auxiliary equipment such as quench system, and absorber or scrubber to treat waste that contains chlorinated components.

    Typical Applications:
    • Chemical Plants Pharmaceutical Plants

    Key Features:
    • Destruction Removal Efficiency (DRE)- Up to 99.9999%
    • NFPA 86 Compliant Burner Management system
    • Halogenated scrubber to Minimize halogen emissions

Acid Gas /Tail Gas Sulfur Bearing) Thermal Oxidizers

The Tail gas Thermal Oxidizer serves as the final stage in sulfur recovery unit and represents the most common application for treating waste streams containing sulfur components, with hydrogen sulfide (H2S) being a primary component. Cimarron offers both forced draft and natural draft units. Operating temperature depends on the required H2S and CO levels in the flue gas.

    Typical Applications:
    • Natural Gas Processing Plants
    • Sulfur recovery units

    Key Features:
    • Destruction Removal Efficiency (DRE)- Up to 99.9999%
    • Low NOx- ≥ 0.06 lb/MMBtu
    • NFPA 86 Compliant Burner Management system
    • SO2 scrubber to Minimize SO2 emissions

Ammonia/HCN Waste Thermal Oxidizers with SCR

The combustion of waste gas containing nitrogen bearing compounds results in the formation of chemical NOx. Cimarron provides integrated systems including Thermal Oxidizer with SCR/SNCR reactor to effectively reduce NOx emissions and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

    Typical Applications:
    • Chemical/Manufacturing Plants
    • Process Plants

    Key Features:
    • Destruction Removal Efficiency (DRE)- Up to 99.9999%
    • NFPA 86 Compliant Burner Management system

  • Ultra Low Nox Thermal Oxidizers

Ultra Low NOx Thermal Oxidizers with Certified Ultra Low Emission burner (CEB)

When conventional Thermal Oxidizer burner technology is not able to achieve ultra-low NOx level <0.06 lb/MMBtu, Cimarron can offer a proprietary CEB burner to be used with a Thermal Oxidizer system. NOx levels as low as 0.018 lb/MMBtu are achievable with this technology.

    Typical Applications:

    • Refineries
    • Chemical plants
    • Gaseous from process plants
    • Dehydration units

    Key Features:

    • Destruction Removal Efficiency (DRE)- Up to 99.9999%
    • Ultra Low NOx- ≤ 0.018 lb/MMBtu
    • Low CO- ≤0.01 lb/MMBtu
    • NFPA 86 Compliant Burner Management system
    • Fully Pre-Mixed Fuel Gas Burner
