Utility Flares

Utility flares are the oldest and one of the most basic flare designs. Utility flares are employed in applications which either do not require smokeless burning, or in applications where smokeless flaring can be achieved without the use of an additional assist medium. Utility flares do not use auxiliary assist methods such as steam, air, or gas to improve smokeless capacity.

  • Energy Efficiency

    Decrease Utility Consumption: Utility flares are the answer for operators who have applications which do not require smokeless burning or in applications where smokeless flaring can be achieved without the use of an additional assist medium. Typical applications are CO2, Biogas, or other applications with low BTU gas < 1,000 BTU/scf. These applications do not require any rotating equipment or assist medium, which significantly reduces maintenance costs.

  • How It Works

    These flares are typically accompanied by a Dynamic Seal in the base of the tip to reduce purge gas costs and prevent flashback. A Molecular Seal can also be used to reduce required purge rates and provides increased security against potential flashback, especially in applications with high percentages of Hydrogen in the waste gas stream. Additionally, the Cimarron Utility Tip incorporates a flame retention ring to eliminate flame lift off and to ensure stable, reliable combustion.

  • Design Parameter Considerations

    • Inlet Gas Temperature: Standard packages utilize carbon steel gas risers that can handle temperatures ranging from -20°F up to 600°F+. Low-temperature carbon steel can be utilized as a cost-effective solution for temps down to -50°F. For gas that is colder than -50°F, stainless steel process pipe is used.
    • Inlet Pressure: Flares can handle a range of inlet pressures from 0.1 psig up to 50 psig. The standard steel piping of the gas riser can structurally handle pressures higher than 50 psig, considering that flare systems are open to atmosphere and do not retain pressure. However, there is potential for the flare tip flame to break away or lift off form the flare tip at pressures higher than 50 psig. Special design considerations can be utilized at pressures higher than 50 psig to fit your specific needs.
